About GBT dads Ayrshire
There are a number of members of Ayrshire LGBT, who also happen to be dad’s and we understand how the feelings of stress, isolation and guilt can affect a father’s relationship with his children, family and friends, and also his general well-being. We also understand the fear of potential or actual discrimination from family and friends experienced by dads in this situation.
Ayrshire LGBT members have identified a need for a group for dad’s in Ayrshire that can informally provide support to fathers who may be struggling with any aspect of coping with being GBT and a dad. Anyone who attends a meeting is under no obligation to provide any life history. There may not always be trained counsellors at the group, however these can be invited. As a rule it will be a bunch of guys at varying stages of what you are going through. All will have different stories, all will have different experiences, and all will have the desire to make lives better for themselves and their children. Hopefully with their experience, they can help you do the same. Group leaders will usually have been through an experience similar to yours and come out the other side.
The range of topics will be diverse as each person’s circumstances differ from the next, and will include coming out to wives/partners and kids, and coping with reactions to this.
Meeting format will take the form of everyone (if they wish too), introducing themselves in a few sentences, telling as much or as little as they want too about their situation. There will then be a period of discussion and feedback. It can be good to hear that your situation is not unique and that others have gone through similar to you at one time or another. Meetings will last no more than 90 minutes but group members can continue to support each other outside of the meeting times.
IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT ANYTHING DISCUSSED AT ANY GROUP MEETINGS REMAINS CONFIDENTIAL.
Ground rules will be set from the outset so that the group itself can create its own rules, however total confidentiality and discretion will be assured at every level.
